War in the Middle East | More than 70 injured in Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia

The victims also included women and children, said the spokesman for the Saudi-led military alliance fighting against the Houthis in Yemen. 

The attacks hit civilian and economic targets in Khamis Mushait, Najran and other cities in the south of the kingdom. The alliance spokesman did not say when the attacks took place. He spoke of a “dangerous escalation.” “All necessary steps” will be taken to eliminate the threat from Yemen. The Houthis initially did not comment on the attacks.

The Houthis had previously accused Saudi Arabia of an airstrike on a prison in Yemen. Houthi-controlled Al-Masirah television reported that at least 11 people were killed in Monday's attack. The search for 20 more missing people continues. Saudi Arabia initially did not comment. None of the information could initially be independently verified. 

The Saudi Energy Ministry said several energy facilities were hit in southern Saudi Arabia, causing fires to break out in several locations. Operations have been temporarily suspended. The militia had already hit the energy infrastructure of the kingdom, which is one of the largest oil producers in the world, severely in the years before the start of the Iran war.

In Yemen, the Iran-backed Houthis have been fighting the Saudi-backed government for more than a decade. There has been an unofficial ceasefire since 2022. In the wake of the Iran war, the conflict in Yemen has flared up again. Among other things, there are fighting on the western coast of the Red Sea.  dpa/nd
