The CDU, once the people's party, has collapsed to 5.3% and is only barely surviving the threshold; Party leader Merz calls it “a disaster.” The only democratic majority without AfD participation would come from the SPD, the Left and the Greens – assuming all three smaller parties actually make it in. The left will thus tip the scales: top candidate Oldenburg has already offered to continue with red-red. All numbers are projections, not official final results.
