Germany's Own Spy Agency Just Confirmed the Nazis Are Winning — And Still Calls It a Report

The Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz released its 2025 annual report this month, and the headline figure should stop nobody's heart because it has been climbing every single year: 58,700 people now counted in Germany's rechtsextremistisches Personenpotenzial, up from 50,250 in 2024, 40,600 in 2023, 38,800 in 2022, and 33,900 in 2021. Of this year's total, 15,600 are classified as violence-oriented — itself up from 15,300 the year before. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt calls right-wing extremism the "biggest threat" to Germany's constitutional order in his foreword. It is the first time in years that sentence has appeared there at all.
Notice what the number is not: a surprise. It is the direct, arithmetic consequence of the AfD growing to 70,000 members in 2025, a party the domestic intelligence service still only classifies as a "Verdachtsfall" — a suspected case — after a court handed the AfD a procedural win against its "confirmed extremist" designation. The agency tasked with defending the constitutional order cannot even settle, in court, whether the largest opposition party in several state parliaments is what its own statistics say it obviously is. Meanwhile Sachsen-Anhalt is heading toward a possible AfD state government after September's election, and Thuringia's own interior minister is on record calling an AfD interior minister a "security risk" — worth remembering when the agency that would answer to that minister is the same one publishing this report.
The BfV also flags something we've been saying since the Faultline desk existed: the far-right scene is organizing children now. Family gatherings, Brauchtum events, youth camps — a deliberate, generational pipeline described in the state's own words as "systematic radicalization of the next generation." A group called Letzte Verteidigungswelle is under watch for planning arson and explosive attacks on refugee shelters and left-wing organizing spaces, explicitly aiming to collapse "the democratic system." This is not a fringe curiosity buried in a footnote. It is page one of a state intelligence report and it changes nothing about how that state funds, staffs, or restrains the party these people vote for.
The report's other half deserves scrutiny too, because it will be weaponized against us in every talk show for the next month: left-wing extremism counted at 42,200, a new high, with 11,600 flagged violence-oriented, cited alongside arson attacks on Berlin power infrastructure. We are not going to pretend those attacks didn't happen. We are going to point out the framing trick embedded in printing both numbers on facing pages as if they were symmetrical threats to the same order. One side is 15,600 people the state itself says are trying to burn refugees out of their homes and dismantle the republic by force. The other is people attacking the infrastructure of a police and surveillance state that, per this same report, is currently failing to contain the first group. Equivalence is the state's oldest trick for laundering its own negligence — count the antifascists as symmetrically dangerous and nobody has to explain why the AfD number tripled its member count while under a "suspected case" label with zero teeth.
None of this is abstract for the people it lands on. A record right-wing violent-potential count sits alongside a Bundesland — Sachsen-Anhalt — voting AfD into governing range, alongside record far-right crime statistics already reported out of Bavaria and Hesse this year, alongside synagogue arson in Wuppertal we covered weeks ago. The pattern is not new extremism appearing from nowhere; it is the same extremism the state has watched grow for five straight years while treating "monitoring" as a substitute for "stopping." A number going up in a government PDF changes nothing on its own. What changes anything is the organizing already happening outside the state's permission — the antifa networks, the tenant unions, the refugee solidarity work the Verfassungsschutz spends its other hand surveilling. That's the fight. The report just confirmed, in the state's own numbers, that nobody else is going to win it for us.
