Elections in MV and Berlin: “Twilight of the Chancellor” on TV? Rather: “Two Angels for Germany”.

It's somehow no longer fun to watch series. Maybe the hype is over, maybe no one has time to watch mindless TV for eight hours anymore. Or reality sounds so made up that fiction can't keep up. For example, Babylon Berlin, fifth season, now new in the media library: If you watch democracy disintegrate from morning until the end of the day, you don't have to do it on the couch.

In reality, a new episode of “Chancellor Twilight” aired this week. And anyone who liked the series Borgen and House of Cards will say: This time they exaggerated a bit.

It started when a CDU influencer was allowed to say on primetime German television: The Chancellor can't do it. Clara von Nathusius, that's her name, is honorary treasurer of the Junge Union. It's certainly a nice position, but not one that normally has any special appeal. We know this from sports clubs or parents' councils: someone has to take care of the cash register.

That didn't stop the ARD capital studio from inviting her to the “Report from Berlin”. Now her appearance revealed a lot about the anarchy in the CDU - but also about the logic of some media. People complain that there is so much argument in politics, but they do everything they can to fuel this argument.

For a long time it looked as if the week was heading towards a crime thriller at crime scene time: the location of the crime was clear, the Konrad Adenauer House. Friedrich Merz had invited his executive committee there to discuss the expected election defeats. The only thing that was unclear was who would take on the role of the Chancellor's killer. The prime ministers have canceled, for now.

It all sounds like an exciting series, and a sequel is guaranteed. Nevertheless, “Twilight of the Chancellor” only gets 3 out of 5 stars. Because the drama has a weakness: nobody knows what it's about.

There is constant debate about the Chancellor's head, but the political problems that are causing his crisis are rarely discussed. The Union and the SPD don't know who they are and what they want to be. And the federal government cannot bring itself to formulate an alternative to social cuts and rearmament.

How good that a new series starts on Sunday. It is still unclear whether it will be a comedy or a drama. But we can reveal this much: “Two Angels for Germany” is about two women who are trying to save democracy in Germany. One is Manuela Schwesig, an ice-cold angel from the northeast. She has a dark history because she once got involved with some shady Russians. But now she could manage to push back the right-wing extremists with a clear course against social cuts and breathe new life into her long-declared party.

The other main character is Elif Eralp, she could win the elections in Berlin. But in order to become ruler, she has to defeat powerful opponents: nasty guys with suitcases of money want to stop her from expropriating apartments. And then there are the crazy people in their party...

Both women have one thing in common: They show that there is an alternative to the AfD. Both could lead a progressive alliance after the elections. And then we'll finally talk about something other than the right-wing extremists again. Whether “Two Angels for Red-Red-Green” will have a happy ending must remain a cliffhanger for now. But the possibility alone is more exciting than the next episode “Twilight of the Chancellor”. Tune in!
