Sachsen-Anhalt Voted in the Party Its Own Verfassungsschutz Calls Rechtsextremistisch

On 6 September, Sachsen-Anhalt handed the AfD 43.8 percent of the vote — the best result any party has won in the state since reunification, and the best a state AfD branch has ever posted anywhere in Germany. The CDU collapsed to 17.2 percent, its worst showing ever. Thirty-nine of eighty-three seats went to a party that Sachsen-Anhalt's own Verfassungsschutz has classified, since November 2023, as a "gesichert rechtsextremistische Bestrebung" — a confirmed right-wing extremist endeavor, not a suspicion, a finding.

That classification is not a rhetorical flourish. The state's domestic intelligence agency spent years documenting it: AfD Sachsen-Anhalt officials calling migrants "Invasoren" and "kulturfremde Versorgungsmigranten," branding German citizens with migration backgrounds "Passdeutsche," and pushing an ethnopluralist Volksbegriff that sorts human worth by ancestry — a direct assault on Article 1 of the Grundgesetz, the one that guarantees human dignity is inviolable. A district AfD chapter in Wittenberg has openly called for a military coup. None of this stopped 576,000 people from voting for it. If anything, it may have helped: the party's core message is that Germany's institutions are already illegitimate, so a state watchdog calling it extremist just confirms the story it tells its own voters.

The numbers behind this didn't appear overnight. The Verfassungsschutz's own tally of the rechtsextremistisches Personenpotenzial tied to parties in Sachsen-Anhalt has climbed in lockstep with the AfD's rise: 1,270 people in 2022, 3,350 in 2023 — the year of the classification — and roughly 5,100 by 2025, a 27.5 percent jump in the final year alone. The agency is not describing a fringe hardening in isolation. It is describing the AfD's own membership and infrastructure being absorbed wholesale into the category "extremist," year after year, while the party simultaneously became the single largest force in a state parliament.

The liberal response to this has been noise without teeth: warnings, press conferences, Verfassungsschutz reports nobody outside comment sections reads, and a "firewall" that Wagenknecht's BSW is already offering to help the AfD climb over — its lead candidate said openly there are "Schnittmengen," overlaps, worth exploring. Meanwhile the AfD's youth wing dissolved itself on paper in March 2025 only to reconstitute, personnel and politics intact, as "Generation Deutschland" months later, with a Sachsen-Anhalt branch stood up in Burg by January 2026. Institutional bans and classifications that carry no material consequence — no funding cut deep enough, no organizational ban, no actual disruption of infrastructure — are theater. The tens of thousands who marched against the AfD after the election in more than 35 cities understand something the state apparatus still won't act on: naming a fire isn't extinguishing it.

What Sachsen-Anhalt shows, plainly, is that "extremist" as a bureaucratic label has become compatible with governing. That should terrify anyone who thought Verfassungsschutz classification functioned as a backstop. It doesn't. It's a paper wall. The actual firewall was always going to be built by people in the street, in unions, in tenant and migrant solidarity networks — not by an intelligence agency's annual report. Sachsen-Anhalt just proved the paper version has already failed.
