Beyond Library Limits: building opportunities through outreach, knowledge, and service

When partner institutions, librarians, and educators collaborate for a common cause, they can bring immense joy and inspiration to a community. Traditional views often portray libraries as quiet, dusty repositories of books, but today’s libraries are far more dynamic. Academic and community institutions have evolved into active catalysts for literacy, learning, community development, and social change.

In the rugged and remote areas of our region, students often face significant barriers to learning, including limited access to books and essential educational resources. Recognizing this gap, the dedicated librarians of the Easter College Library poured their hearts into a transformative initiative: Beyond Library Limits: Building Opportunities through Outreach, Knowledge, and Service. This initiative reflects a collaborative vision to overcome physical barriers and bring meaningful learning opportunities directly to classrooms and communities that need them most.

Bringing the BOOKS program to life was not easy. Behind every book delivered and every smile was a story of dedication and personal sacrifice. Easter College librarians already carried demanding workloads and daily responsibilities, yet they willingly devoted their personal time to make the outreach missions possible.

They did more than distribute books. They sought to nurture lasting reading habits, strengthen literacy skills, and inspire young minds to discover the transformative power of education. Their commitment demonstrates what libraries and librarians can achieve when professional dedication is combined with compassion and a genuine desire to serve the community.

Sowing Seeds of Literacy in the High Altitudes of Sadanga

This timeless truth echoed on April 2, 2025, when the Easter College Library embarked on a milestone journey to the high-altitude municipality of Sadanga, Mountain Province. Led by School President Cleofe P. Kollin and Chief Librarian Meling Solis, the team delivered a carefully curated collection of books to the eager learners of Sadanga Elementary School and Sadanga National High School.

The mission was to expand students’ reading choices, foster a vibrant reading culture, and support their academic growth. School representatives expressed heartfelt gratitude to Easter College, emphasizing the positive impact these resources would have on students’ learning. The outreach demonstrated how modern libraries can champion knowledge sharing and extend their service far beyond their physical walls.

On April 1, 2026, the Easter College Libraries brought targeted, tailored support to Epiphany Academy of La Trinidad, Inc. (also known as Epiphany Christian Academy). This initiative was a true collaborative triumph, bringing together different specialized units within the Easter College library system to meet the school’s unique academic needs.

A tailored, collaborative effort came to life through a dedicated team of educators. Jonafee Pacatiw handpicked age-appropriate books to spark early reading joy in younger children, while Mae Ann Ringor carefully curated academic and developmental titles for junior high students. Leading the overall mission, Meling B. Solis and Ethan managed the donation, providing standard textbooks alongside a complete set of encyclopedias to enrich the academy’s reference and research capabilities.

Bringing Stories to Life at St. Michael Elementary School

In Kamog, Sablan, Benguet, the BOOKS team conducted a vibrant and interactive literacy session at St. Michael Elementary School. Rather than simply delivering resources, the librarians engaged directly with the pupils through animated storytelling and books that sparked their imaginations and encouraged participation.

Following the session, Chief Librarian Meling B. Solis conducted a hands-on evaluation to assess its impact. The feedback was highly encouraging. The children shared that the storytelling increased their excitement about reading, captured their attention, and strengthened their listening skills. The educational games and activities also made learning enjoyable, purposeful, and enriching, leaving the young learners eager to participate and discover more through books.

The reach of the BOOKS program continued to expand, opening doors to academic resources and supporting regional literacy initiatives through targeted book distributions.

On February 27, 2025, the heart-led outreach campaign climbed into the misty heights of Kibungan National High School. Understanding that high school learners in remote mountain communities face steep barriers to accessing quality learning materials, the BOOKS initiative delivered a rich, thoughtfully chosen selection of reference books and academic reading materials.

On December 24, 2023, just as the festive chill of the holiday season swept through the mountains, the BOOKS initiative brought a special kind of warmth to the eager young learners of Saclit Elementary School. Stepping into the role of holiday messengers, the dedicated librarians organized a heartfelt Christmas outreach event designed to deliver both festive joy and academic encouragement. They distributed carefully selected educational materials and holiday gifts, bringing bright, unforgettable smiles and a deep sense of inspiration to the young pupils during this magical season. This heartwarming mission beautifully proved that the true spirit of the holidays lies in sharing the gift of learning, hope, and community care with children who need it most.

On November 8, 2024, the BOOKS initiative extended a warm hand of solidarity to the Philippine Librarians Association (CAR), donating a valuable collection of professional books and materials to its Cordillera chapter. Far more than a simple handover of resources, this contribution fueled vital regional advocacy for reading, sparked rich professional collaboration, and wove an unbreakable bond of educational unity across the highland communities

Through these collective efforts, the BOOKS initiative achieved vital milestones that left a lasting impact. By nurturing a reading culture, the project sparked a genuine enthusiasm for books among children, fostering a daily reading habit. It also lifted literacy awareness, helping students and teachers recognize education’s critical role in personal and community growth. Beyond classrooms, the initiative forged strong alliances through partnerships between Easter College Library and other professional groups, while inspiring a spirit of service and volunteerism among librarians.

By stepping out into the community, the library continues to prove that its mission extends far beyond its physical walls, shaping the future of education, one school, one book, and one child at a time.
