In the so-called Budapest complex, a verdict was passed for anti-fascist Maja from Jena: After the appeal process, Maja now faces seven years in prison instead of the original eight. Critics accuse the Hungarian judiciary of conducting a political show trial.

Antifascist Maja from Jena was sentenced to seven years in prison in Budapest today. In the first instance, Maja was originally sentenced to eight years in prison in February. The defense of the non-binary person appealed and demanded acquittal. In the appeal process, the public prosecutor's office again demanded that the sentence be increased to at least 13 years; the maximum sentence is 24 years.

Maja herself has been in solitary confinement in Hungary for over two years and reported conditions similar to torture. She was illegally extradited to Budapest on June 28th; the Federal Constitutional Court was unable to intervene in time.

Hartmut Brückner from the federal board of the Red Aid e.V. said: "It wasn't just Maja and those convicted in absentia who were in court. Anti-fascism as such was condemned here." Meanwhile, Member of the European Parliament from the Left Party Martin Schirdewan called for Maja to be transferred back to Germany immediately. The federal government cannot wait any longer.

Maja and other defendants from the so-called Budaspest complex are accused of being involved in clashes with suspected neo-Nazis on the fascist Day of Honor in Budapest in February 2023. This evening a decision will be made in France about the possible extradition of the Albanian-born anti-fascist Rexhino Abazaj (“Gino”) to Germany. He could also be extradited to the Hungarian justice system via this detour. Protests have been announced following the verdict.
