This is how district councilor Dennis Egginger-Gonzalez (Left) answered these two questions. As a result of the election of the district council on September 20th, he could now be in a position to work full-time on solving the problem in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district as a city councilor for urban development. His party wants him to get this position, as it announced the day after the election.

The Left received 12.6 percent of the vote. That was less than in all eleven other districts of Berlin, where the party shot up to 40.1 percent in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. But for Steglitz-Zehlendorf, 16.6 percent is an equally astonishing result. For the first time, it is enough for the party to be entitled to a city council position in the district office.

“You are fantastic,” Egginger-Gonzalez thanked the voters in a video. "We have seven representatives in parliament and I can become the first left-wing city councilor in Steglitz-Zehlendorf in the entire history of this district," he said. However, whether the dream comes true still depends on negotiations between the parties. That's why Egginger-Gonzalez doesn't want to comment on this or about himself.

He has lived in Berlin since 2003, where he studied political science at the Free University and also worked as a nursing assistant for many years. His dissertation dealt with left-wing socialist resistance against National Socialism.

Egginger-Gonzalez has been one of two district councilors for the Left in Steglitz-Zehlendorf since 2021. At that time, he declared as a candidate: "For me, strengthening social cohesion in the district means, among other things, protecting tenants of housing companies from insatiable greed for profit." Before the most recent election last Sunday, Egginger-Gonzalez said that a rent cap and environmental protection areas were needed to protect tenants from luxury renovations and to maintain repression.

"We're not taking off now, we're continuing on in a down-to-earth manner," promises Egginger-Gonzalez in the video mentioned above. Thanks to the good election results, the party's social and tenancy law advice could even be expanded. The political scientist is currently an employee of MP Franziska Brychcy (Left) and could stay that way if the city council position doesn't work out. Brychcy once again managed to get back into the House of Representatives on Sunday.
