CITIZENS Revolution supporters marched through Riobamba in Ecuador on Wednesday demanding the release of jailed left leader Luisa Gonzalez.
Ms Gonzalez, who twice stood against President Daniel Noboa in elections, has been held in the town since her arrest on October 23. Prosecutors accuse her of illegal campaign financing, but supporters say this is part of a “lawfare” campaign persecuting political opponents of the regime.
Participants later marched to the regional governor’s office, chanting “Out, Noboa, out!” Another such demonstration was reported in the capital, Quito, today as the Morning Star went to press.
Former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, who was exiled by his turncoat successor and whose very voice has been banned from the airwaves in subsequent elections, said Ms Gonzalez’s imprisonment was an “outrage.”
“We are very proud of Luisa, she always knew what she was risking” (by agreeing to stand against Mr Noboa), he added.
