Interior Minister Laurent Nunez called the attack a “deadly rampage” in Trappes, La Verriere, a suburb of Paris. He classified it as a “terrorist crime.”
Among the wounded was a 12-year-old girl who sustained severe injuries. She and two others are now fighting for their lives.
Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh said the gunman appeared to have fired relatively randomly, targeting passersby at several locations including a playground.
“This is probably one of the first attempted mass killings motivated by Islamophobia and racism,” he told reporters. “This was a terrorist attack with racist, likely Islamophobic, overtones.” The person killed was of African origin and one of the critically injured was of north African origin, he added.
Equalities Minister Aurore Berge said: “If a racist motive is established, I hope that the whole nation will stand alongside the residents of Trappes, La Verriere, and the victims.”
