Speaking to a meeting in the Commons with visiting Cuban MPs, Mr Burgon said it was no longer enough for the government to simply vote against the illegal US-imposed blockade at the United Nations but had to act.
“Cuba has stood up for us, we should now stand up for Cuba,” he said.
The packed meeting heard the Cuban MPs describe the desperate situation the intensified blockade was creating on the socialist island.
“It is no longer a blockade, it is a silent genocide against our people,” said Cuban MP Carlos Leon.
Enrique Gutierrez, president of the Cuba-UK parliamentary friendship group, outlined the fight to “save all the achievements of Cuban healthcare” in the face of energy blackouts and medicine shortages.
In response to a question about the willingness of the Cubans to defend their revolution in the face of possible US armed aggression, he told the meeting: “We are women and men of peace, we would prefer peace, but we are not afraid of war.”
Teacher and MP Marta Romero acknowledged a “very difficult situation” in the education sector and warned that the US was out to destroy Cuba as a social model to the rest of Latin America.
Cuba Solidarity Campaign chair Kevin Courtney told the meeting that it had raised £500,000 in aid in its Cuba Vive campaign, but that such work needed to be stepped up.
The meeting was chaired by Labour MP Steve Witherden and attended by MPs Apsana Begum, Jeremy Corbyn, Ian Lavery, Grahame Morris and Jon Trickett as well as Mr Burgon.
