By choosing the wild plant, the foundation wants to draw attention to the threatened habitat of natural river floodplains, as it announced. The yellow meadow rue grows primarily in moist meadows and floodplains.

The yellow meadow rue (Thalictrum flavum) is now on the early warning list of Germany's red list. “The yellow meadow rue represents an endangered ecosystem that we need to preserve more urgently than ever for nature and climate protection,” said project manager André Palm.

With its election as Flower of the Year 2027, the foundation is appealing to give rivers their space back. “Around a third of all Central European species live in a very small space in the floodplains,” said Palm. Rivers need their natural flow for plants, animals and fungi to survive. But also so that water can be stored in the landscape, groundwater can be formed and floods or heavy rain events can be mitigated, it was said.

The yellow meadow rue belongs to the buttercup family and can grow up to 1.50 meters high under favorable conditions. Its yellow flowers can be seen from June to August. During the flowering period, the plant forms an upright, very dense panicle of hundreds of individual flowers.

The Flower of the Year campaign was initiated in 1980 by the biologist Loki Schmidt, the wife of Chancellor Helmut Schmidt. The aim is to draw attention to endangered wild plants and their habitats every year. This year the field delphinium is the flower of the year.
