According to US media reports: Washington wants to approve a billion-dollar arms package for Israel

afp | According to local media reports, the US government is close to approving an arms package worth $2.8 billion (around €2.4 billion) for Israel. According to a report in the Washington Post, the package financed by US taxpayers includes some of the most destructive types of ammunition in Western arsenals, including 20,000 each of the MK-84s, BLU-117s and I-2000 warheads. The New York Times reported, citing a US official, that US President Donald Trump's administration had approved the sale.

A senior government official told AFP that "all arms sales abroad go through the prescribed process" but declined to comment on pending transactions.

Meanwhile, a State Department spokesman told AFP: "As a policy, the Department does not confirm or comment on planned arms sales until they have been formally communicated to Congress."

The announcement of the arms package for Israel came shortly after the release of a Defense Department report in which the US acknowledged for the first time an ammunition shortage as a result of the war.

In February 2025, the Trump administration approved the sale of bombs, missiles and other equipment worth more than $7.4 billion to Israel.
