Reducing Europe's dependence on fossil fuels: How Ursula von der Leyen wants to electrify the EU

Dependence on fossil energy has recently cost Europe dearly. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen therefore wants fewer energy imports. Electricity should play a much larger role in the future, she said in her State of the Union speech. By 2040, its share of European energy consumption is expected to double. Furthermore, water reserves worldwide are coming under increasing pressure. Rivers are carrying too little water, groundwater levels are falling and glaciers are continuing to lose mass. This is shown by a report from the World Weather Organization (WMO).

After France, the Netherlands has now also presented a national roadmap for phasing out fossil fuels. Oil, gas and coal should be pushed back and electricity should play a much larger role. However, it remains unclear how quickly the country should phase out gas and oil.
