CSU calls for a ban on expropriation: protectors of the ruling class

afp/taz | After the election victory of the Left in Berlin, the CSU is calling for rapid implementation of the action agreed in the coalition committee against the socialization of large private housing stocks. “The Left’s expropriation plans are driving the housing market into ruin and are associated with horrendous costs,” CSU General Secretary Martin Huber told the newspapers of the Funke media group. “We must now implement the decision in the coalition committee to ban expropriation of real estate by federal law as quickly as possible.”

Huber described the Left's plans as a “socialist suicide mission” that would not allow a single new apartment to be built and would endanger necessary private investments. The CSU General Secretary referred to the protection of property in the Basic Law. “Property is protected by our Constitution and it will remain that way,” he said.

After its election victory, the Berlin Left announced that it would stick to its plans to socialize large housing companies. Top candidate Elif Eralp said on Monday that it was clear to her that in a future state government “there must also be socialization”.

After the coalition committee in July, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) announced a law that would prohibit the states from expropriating housing associations. The background was the black-red coalition's concern that a referendum on the socialization of housing stock would be implemented in Berlin.

At the beginning of July, the coalition committee of the Union and the SPD decided on a corresponding order for the federal government to examine the legal options for taking action against socialization at the state level and to implement the corresponding regulations. However, the federal government has not yet presented a concrete timetable for a draft law.
