Nuclear Abolition Day 2026: Global Events Bring Together Generations for a Nuclear-Weapon-Free World

As the United Nations prepares to mark the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons on September 26, peace organizations are organizing global events to bring renewed attention to nuclear disarmament and the urgent need for international cooperation and a Nuclear-Weapon-Free World

The annual observance, established by the UN General Assembly in 2013, provides an opportunity to raise public awareness about the threat posed by nuclear weapons and the importance of their total elimination.

This year, two international gatherings will bring together peace advocates, Nobel Peace Prize laureates, experts and members of different generations to discuss the future of nuclear disarmament.

A global gathering for nuclear abolition

On September 25–26, the online event Towards a Nuclear-Weapon-Free World  will feature international experts, Nobel Peace Prize laureates and cultural performances.

The program includes special screenings of An Ordinary Insanity, a documentary featuring renowned whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg, followed by discussions with the filmmakers. Four sessions across different time zones will allow participants from around the world to join.

Organizers also report that approximately 2,000 organizations have endorsed the Nuclear Abolition Day Appeal, which will be presented to the United Nations and its member states.

On September 29, the UN General Assembly will hold a high-level meeting in New York to address nuclear disarmament. According to the UN, more than 12,000 nuclear weapons remain worldwide, while nuclear-armed states continue investing in the modernization of their arsenals.

Examining the arms trade

A second event, scheduled for October 18, will examine the international arms trade and its role in Israel’s wars.

Co-hosted by Nonviolence International and Voices from the Holy Land, the online roundtable Bombs Don’t Make Themselves: Who’s Arming Israel’s Wars will feature Josh Paul, Hine-Wai Loose, Natalie Davidson and Francesco Staccioli.

The discussion will explore the international networks involved in weapons production and supply, and the responsibilities of governments and other actors.

Together, these events connect international diplomacy with public education and civil society participation, highlighting the continuing debate over how humanity can move toward a world free of nuclear weapons.
