Environmental protection | How Germany wants to save African nature reserves

In order to secure the protected areas in the long term, Germany will contribute 100 million US dollars (almost 87.9 million euros) to the “Legacy Landscapes Fund”, announced Environment Minister Carsten Schneider (SPD), according to information from German government circles, at an event on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Schneider and Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan (SPD) have agreed with private donors on a package totaling 300 million US dollars (around 263.6 million euros). The $100 million in state funding would be supplemented by $200 million from two private foundations. The money could be used to secure ten of Africa's most valuable nature reserves for at least 50 years. The long-term financing is intended to give the protected areas planning security and a perspective. At the same time, the package is intended to be a signal for the World Nature Conference coming up in October.

The “Legacy Landscapes Fund”, which was founded by the Ministry of Development, ensures basic financing for outstanding nature reserves. The aim is to provide long-term support for the so-called “legacy landscapes”. dpa/nd
