Survey | SPD in the northeast overtakes AfD

Photo: dpa/Jens Büttner Schwerin.  Three days before the state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, according to a ZDF poll, the SPD has overtaken the AfD. In the “Politbarometer Extra” published on Thursday evening, however, the Chancellor’s CDU party continues to slide and comes dangerously close to the five percent hurdle. 

According to figures collected by the Elections Research Group, Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig's SPD has 37 percent, 3 percentage points more than in the previous week. The AfD with challenger Leif-Erik Holm lost one point to 36 percent. For a long time, the SPD was behind the AfD in surveys. 

The CDU loses one point and only gets 6 percent. The Left, which governs with the SPD, also lost one point and reached 9 percent. The Greens have to worry about entering the state parliament with an unchanged 5 percent. According to surveys, the Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) missed this with 4 percent. 

If people could elect the Prime Minister directly, incumbent Schwesig would be the undisputed leader with 61 percent. 30 percent prefer her challenger Holm. 

According to the elections research group, 79 percent are sure who they will vote for on Sunday. 21 percent are still unsure. 

The elections research group interviewed 1,395 eligible voters on behalf of ZDF from September 14th to 17th. It indicates the error tolerance for a share value of 40 percent as plus/minus three percentage points; for a share value of ten percent it is plus/minus two points. According to the information, the survey is representative. 

Election surveys are always subject to uncertainty. Among other things, weakening party ties and increasingly short-term voting decisions make it more difficult for opinion researchers to weight the data collected. In principle, surveys only reflect the opinion at the time of the survey and are not predictions of the election outcome.  dpa/nd
