Right scene | Raid after Dresden attack on right-wing extremists

Photo: dpa/Daniel Schäfer A raid that took place this Tuesday in three federal states and was initiated by the Dresden public prosecutor's office and the Saxony State Criminal Police Office (LKA) is presumably related to an attack on the neo-Nazi Max Schreiber in Dresden's Neustadt. Schreiber, who is involved in the right-wing extremist party Free Saxony, is one of nine people injured in the attack, according to information from the Bild newspaper. This took place in August 2025 and thus at a time when Schreiber repeatedly attracted attention with provocations in the left-wing trendy district.

According to the LKA, the search measures were aimed at seven suspects between the ages of 20 and 35. Objects in Saxony, Baden-Württemberg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania were searched. There is an initial suspicion of communal serious bodily harm. The accused are said to have initially attacked a group of four together with other unknown perpetrators on the night of August 4th to 5th, 2025. According to the Bild newspaper, it was Schreiber and other companions who visited a beer bar in Dresden's Neustadt. As they were leaving, they were attacked by masked people and had beer bottles thrown at them. Observers were reminded of attacks by militant leftists on right-wing extremists, such as those attributed to the Leipzig group around Lina E. and Johann G.

In Dresden's Neustadt, the attackers are said to have later attacked a car into which the injured had fled. A young woman is said to have been threatened with a baton and a gun. Some victims suffered minor bruises and cuts. According to “Bild”, Schreiber is one of these. The LKA did not confirm his involvement upon request. “In order to protect personal rights and for data protection reasons, no personal data of those involved in criminal proceedings are passed on” and neither are they confirmed, an authority spokesman told “nd”. This applies to suspects as well as to injured parties and witnesses.

As a city councilor for the “Free Saxons,” Schreiber was also involved in the Heidenau Stolperstein ban.

Schreiber is one of the most prominent figures in the right-wing extremist scene in the Dresden area and repeatedly attracts attention through targeted provocations. In August 2025, he sought confrontation in Dresdner Neustadt, which, like Leipzig-Connewitz, is considered a left-wing trendy district - initially a few days after the incident that now triggered the search. However, his appearance in a park was met with massive and creative protests from residents. Two activists from the “Dresden wi(e)dersatz” alliance declared his march a fundraising run and collected money for the “Mission Lifeline” organization, which is involved in refugee rescue, for every meter covered. Schreiber was eventually sent off by the police and had to be escorted out of the area. Two weeks later, the event was repeated, according to the “Support for those affected by right-wing violence” project.

As an activist for the Free Saxons, the 38-year-old Schreiber has been organizing demonstrations in the Dresden area for years, often with xenophobic content. In the fall of 2023, he registered a march with thousands of participants against an asylum seekers' home in the Ostergebirge, which, according to the portal "Alternative Dresden News" (ADDN), was "one of the largest anti-asylum demonstrations in Saxony in recent years." He had previously mobilized against a container settlement for refugees on the outskirts of Dresden.

Schreiber does not shy away from intimidation and physical violence in his activities. At an unregistered Corona demonstration he led on February 13, 2022, journalists and their companions were hunted. In June 2024, the Dresden District Court sentenced Schreiber to one year and two months of probation for, among other things, grievous bodily harm, coercion, usurpation of office, violations of the Assembly Act and incitement to hatred. The verdict was confirmed by the Dresden Regional Court in November 2025.

The convicted criminal is still active in local politics. For the “Free Saxons” he sits on the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district council and is a city councilor in the small town of Heidenau. Last week he was involved in the decision to ban further stumbling blocks, which has since made waves internationally.
