THE fact that the few left at the end of this latest underwhelming performance still managed to raise a chorus of boos said all anyone needed to know about West Ham’s defeat at home to West Brom at the London Stadium.
The pressure is now building on Hammers head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, after a second home defeat inside a week and a month in which his promotion hopefuls take just seven points from a possible 15.
The Nuno style of absorbing pressure, then hitting the opposition on the break, didn’t work very well in the Premier League and it looks even more problematic at Championship level.
Nuno’s side have fallen behind in 10 of their 16 games in all competitions so far this season.
Early on, Morato set up a chance for Pablo, but he shot wide.
Mohamadou Kante then saw his deflected effort go over after good work down the left from Edvin Austbo.
It was the visitors, though, who took the lead. Isaac Price’s through ball found Jimmy Jay Morgan, whose cut-back created an easy tap-in for Felix Horn Myhre.
West Ham were back on terms when Kante swept the ball out to Jarrod Bowen, who squeezed his effort between the goalkeeper and the near-post.
Myhre then turned provider, laying on a chance for Morgan, who was given time to pick his spot and slot the ball past home keeper Mads Hermansen.
The third goal came from a corner, with Morato clearing the ball only as far as Callum Styles, who fired home through a crowded penalty area.
West Ham had a header from Max Kilman and a shot from Kyle Walker-Peters, both of which were comfortably fielded by West Brom keeper Max O’Leary.
Responding to a question over the growing pressure he is under, Nuno Espirito Santo confirmed that he was “always under pressure every day.”
The head coach is clearly concerned about his team conceding early goals on a regular basis, though they are apparently trying to start on the front foot.
West Ham fans aren’t happy with the present state of affairs, though things change quickly in football. Espirito Santo was Manager of the Month in September.
