Welsh government sets out key priorities for Senedd term

Such a document is published by a new government at the start of each Senedd term, outlining what ministers want to achieve before the next election.

Launched by First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth, the 68-page programme focuses on the new government’s priorities, including bringing down NHS waiting lists, supporting families with the high cost of living, creating “good, well-paid” jobs, raising educational standards, tackling child poverty, “working towards” a national care service, promoting housebuilding and creating a “fairer” council tax.

It also spells out the powers Mr ap Iorwerth wants devolved to Wales, including over water, benefits and the economy, as well as the right to hold an independence referendum.

He said the document was the government’s “blueprint for change,” adding: “It sets a new ambition for Wales to realise our vision of a modern, thriving, ambitious and confident nation.

“For too long, silo working has stood in the way of progress. This new government is taking a different approach.

“By bringing imagination and innovation to the way decisions are made and priorities are set, we will work across government departments, not just within them, to address the greatest challenges facing our society today.”

He said this administration’s focus was on “turning our early action into lasting results” and it would be “uncompromising in standing up for Wales and demanding fairness from Westminster.”

“We were elected to get Wales moving after years of drift and stagnation,” Mr ap Iorwerth insisted. “That remains our mission.”
