Many in the crowd waved Irish or Palestinian flags and chanted “Donald Trump not welcome here” and “Irish government, shame on you!”

Paula Butler said she had come with a contingent from the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre to oppose the US president’s “attitude to women, to refugees, to migrants.”

At a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin earlier in the day, Mr Trump had said that Irish reunification “would be a fantastic thing.”

Ms Butler was unimpressed, saying: “What he knows about Irish unity, I’d say I know more on my little finger.”

He had left the city and was on the way to his Doonbeg golf course on the west coast by the time the demonstration began.

The president also held talks President Catherine Connolly, who said in a statement afterwards that she had conveyed to Mr Trump “the strong view of the Irish people that the normalisation of war and genocide can never be accepted.”

When asked about the meeting, Mr Trump said it had been “very nice.”
