RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey welcomed PM Andy Burnham’s admission that “this country has made the wrong choices over 40 years of neoliberalism” and added: “A key part of [that] was bringing outsourcing into our public services.”

The new report Back in House by Common Wealth showed “how much of our public services and public infrastructure have now fallen into the hands of a very small number of multinational corporations who provide nothing of real value to our public services, but collect rent out of them,” he said.

Unison general secretary Andrea Egan spoke of the £6 billion in profits leached out of public services by outsourcers and said “When we talk about public spending they ask us ‘where will the money come from?’ They should be asking, ‘Where is the money going?’”

The meeting welcomed Cabinet Office Minister Louise Haigh’s announcement of a government insourcing unit, and called for ministers to go through services with unions “contract by contract” to plan their return to public control.
