AfD Triples Its Vote in Lower Saxony's Local Elections, Tops Salzgitter's Council - But Loses Every Runoff

Local election results across Lower Saxony, finalized in Sunday's runoff round, show the AfD more than tripling its share of the vote compared to 2021 - from 4.6 percent to 15.9 percent in the state's district-level (Kreiswahl) tally - making it the third-strongest party behind the CDU (27.2 percent, down 4.5 points) and SPD (24.6 percent, down 5.4 points). The Greens fell to 14.1 percent; Die Linke nearly doubled to 6.0 percent.

The sharpest signal came from Salzgitter, a mid-sized industrial city, where the AfD won the city council vote outright with roughly 27.4 percent, beating both the SPD (25.9 percent) and the CDU (23.2 percent) - the first time the far right has topped a council race in a major western German city. Its candidate for mayor, Patricia Mair, forced incumbent CDU mayor Frank Klingebiel into a runoff after he fell short of an outright majority with 45.6 percent.

That runoff, along with two smaller ones in Munster and Bockenem where AfD candidates ran for mayor, was decided Sunday. In all three, AfD candidates lost decisively: Klingebiel held Salzgitter's mayoralty, an independent took 80.5 percent against the AfD in Munster, and another independent beat the AfD candidate 69.6-30.4 in Bockenem.

For antifascists, the split result matters on two levels. First, it confirms the AfD is no longer a protest-vote phenomenon confined to the former East - a tripled vote share and a council plurality in a western industrial city point to durable normalization, not a one-off spike. Second, it shows that firewall politics - CDU, SPD, Greens and independents coordinating behind a single non-AfD candidate in runoffs - still works at the ballot box when local turnout holds. Salzgitter's council will now have to govern with the AfD as its largest bloc, testing whether that firewall extends past election night into daily municipal politics: budget votes, committee chairs, and coalition-building where the AfD image of being blocked from every function loses relevance.

The pattern echoes deeper story threads Faultline has already tracked in Saxony, Hesse, Brandenburg, and Thuringia: fast-rising far-right vote shares in state institutions that were unprepared, or unwilling, to adapt. Lower Saxony is the latest, and largest, confirmation that this is now a nationwide trend, not a regional one.
