SECURITY will be “restored” to the Strait of Hormuz and negotiations will begin “in a short period of time” if the US accepts Iran’s demands, Tehran said today.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Qatar is facilitating indirect talks based on Iran’s seven-step peace plan.

And Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that talks with mediators over a two-day plan to reopen the strait are ongoing and expressed hope the US has “enough sense to choose diplomacy.”

“Everything depends on Washington’s political rationality,” he said.

US President Donald Trump said that the war on Iran will end “very soon one way or the other,” warning that Tehran will either make a deal or “the hammer” will come down.

Speaking at a midterm rally in Kansas today, Mr Trump said that Washington has “dominated” Iran and “can close them down anytime we want.”

“We’re trying to be nice — sometimes you don’t do that,” he said.

“We’re just going to close them down. That’s going to be the end of it.”

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran will not surrender in the face of US war threats, while stressing the need to strengthen public “resilience.”

State media reported that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has granted “certain authorities” to the government on peace talks.

“We must overcome the challenges and crises that the enemies have created for our country today with the support and co-operation of the people,” Mr Pezeshkian told a meeting of governors and mayors.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said two crude oil tankers caught fire after hitting sea mines in the “restricted and unsafe area” east of the strait.

It said tanker owners should “take a lesson from the fate of rogue vessels that attempt to pass through restricted areas by turning off their identification systems.”

The US-Israel war against the Middle East continues on the ground, with at least five people killed in Israeli strikes across Gaza today.

One of the deaths occurred after an air strike targeted a civilian vehicle in Gaza City, according to the Palestine Red Crescent Society.

Details of the other killings by Israeli forces were not immediately available.

Since the so-called ceasefire took effect in October 2025, at least 1,593 Palestinians have been killed and 5,748 injured, Gaza’s Health Ministry has said.

Another 847 bodies have been recovered from under the debris of destroyed buildings.

The total death toll now stands at 74,609.

Meanwhile, Israel’s military has continued to blow up homes and public infrastructure in southern Lebanon.
