RUSSIAN communists rallied in Red Square on Saturday to mark the 109th anniversary of the October Revolution.

Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov saluted the revolution and the Soviet state that followed for “industrialising, educating the people, creating the best social conditions on Earth and demonstrating to all the peoples of the planet that the struggle against colonisers can end in brilliant success.”

He denounced rewritings of history downplaying the importance of 1917, noting that “the bourgeoisie of all times and peoples fears socialism and communists more than anything else;” he saluted the People’s Republic of China which “has continued the idea of the Great October Revolution … taken the place of the great Soviet power and is setting an example for the entire world.”

Mr Zyuganov said the Communist Party was sending humanitarian aid to those fighting “modern-day Nazis and Banderites” on the front line, a reference to the Ukraine war, but also attacked the Russian government for a budget that he said left huge wealth in the hands of oligarchs while starving public services of resources.
