Britain’s largest union staged the demonstration to press Prime Minister Andy Burnham to drop plans to make it harder for foreign care workers to gain permanent residency in Britain.

Low-paid migrants on jobs below graduate level would have to be in the country for 15 years before applying for settlement, instead of the current five, under proposals by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood.

Communities Secretary Angela Rayner recently stood by her previous criticism of the plans as “un-British.”

Unison general secretary Andrea Egan said that the proposals put the Prime Minister’s drive to create a national care service at risk.

“Andy Burnham needs to do the right thing: the government must drop these plans, keep the promises made to migrant workers and invest properly in public services,” she said.
