Dozens of activists from Unite Community and Fuel Poverty Action came together on the day that Ofgem’s price cap on the typical household fuel bill was raised by another £60 to £1,723.
Addressing the rally, Unite Community’s Keith Stoddart said: “We’re here because the price cap has gone up 4 per cent today, but, perhaps more concerningly, it’s likely to go up 16 per cent in the new year.
“That means, as of today, bills are 69 per cent more expensive than they were in 2021, which is horrific.
“We have a new Prime Minister and he’s talking about public ownership. We support that and it offers us an opportunity to have social tariffs, specifically for those living on pensions or those living with disabilities who have a greater need for heating.
“We need to take that message into communities and build the campaign to see that delivered and finally beat the scourge of fuel poverty.”
