Members of the No New Workers group staged a protest in the building on Saturday, ringing the 18th century bell which was on display and strictly off-limits to the public.

The young activists cited the marketplace’s lack of any mandatory policy over insuring coal and recent net zero U-turns.

A single ring of the bell was used to signal bad news during the height of maritime trade.

No New Workers representative said: “Heatwaves, wildfires, floods — we’re already seeing them, and we fear for the future to come. 

“Fossil-fuel corporations are the culprits, but they couldn’t do without the support of massive financial actors like Lloyds. 

“We won’t work for anyone complicit. They need our labour, and we’ll take away what they need.”
