Burnham and Trump clash on AI rules

The Prime Minister told the United Nations general assembly in New York that he wanted “a single set of global principles and standards to ensure the transparency and access we need to increase our preparedness — and to ensure that AI development is safe.”

But President Trump told the assembly that he was firmly opposed to “globalist” regulation of AI.

Nothing daunted, Mr Burnham has committed to putting the issue at the heart of Britain’s presidency of the G20 group of nations over the next year.

“When it comes to guarding against the risks,” Britain has “our world-leading AI Security Institute — working hand in glove with the US and the leading labs on AI safety,” he said.

“But we need to go further. I look back at how we responded to the financial crisis back in 2008,” when Labour premier Gordon Brown led the international response.

“We came together to agree principles — which everyone implemented at home in a way that was right for them. And it worked,” Mr Burnham added.
