Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Now Counts 2,030 Organized Neo-Nazis. The State's Own Study Explains Why.

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's domestic intelligence service put a number on what antifascists in the northeast have been saying for years: the far-right scene there just hit an all-time high. The 2025 Verfassungsschutzbericht, presented by Interior Minister Christian Pegel (SPD) this June, counted 2,030 people in the organized neo-nazi milieu — up from 1,950 in 2024 and 1,855 in 2023. That's a steady climb, not a spike, and it lands in a state where the AfD just became the strongest force in the Landtag with over 38 percent, winning nearly two-thirds of all constituencies outright.

The interesting part isn't the raw count. It's a separate study published around the same time by RAA — Demokratie und Bildung Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which asked why the far right has such deep reach here specifically. Their answer, from social scientist Daniel Trepsdorf: "The normalization of the AfD advances everywhere that democratic parties adopt its narratives, cooperate with it, or let attacks on civil society go unanswered." That's not a culture-war story about rural resentment. It's an infrastructure story. The study found völkisch settlers and AfD-adjacent milieus deliberately target structurally weak regions — the villages where the state already pulled out — and fill the gap with youth outreach that looks apolitical on its surface: a summer camp branded "white boys summer," Simson moped rides, archery. Sixty to seventy percent of the counseling contacts logged by the regional democracy network involve schools, and the report's blunt line is that schools keep treating individual incidents as one-off problems instead of recognizing a pipeline.

This is the part liberal anti-extremism framing keeps missing: you cannot "Verfassungsschutz-report" your way out of a hollowed-out state. Where public infrastructure disappears, the far right doesn't need to win an argument — it just needs to be the only structure left standing offering kids something to do on a Saturday. "Whoever dismantles social infrastructure creates spaces that authoritarian actors deliberately occupy," the study's authors write. That's a sentence every SPD-led state government in the East should have to answer for, because austerity and center-left co-governance built the vacuum the AfD is now walking into with 32 percent statewide and functional majorities in most rural Wahlkreise.

None of this is unique to MV — it's the same mechanism documented in Sachsen-Anhalt, Thuringia, and Hesse's own record far-right crime numbers this year. But MV is instructive because the trajectory is so clean: three straight years of growth in the organized scene, tracking almost exactly alongside three straight years of AfD electoral consolidation. The Verfassungsschutz names "hybride Bedrohungen" — disinformation, cyberattacks — as the emerging worry, and sure, that's real. But the older, duller threat is the one nobody wants to fund a response to: youth work, community centers, the unglamorous stuff that used to make "the only guys handing out flyers in this village" not be neo-nazis.

The organizing implication is not complicated. If the far right's growth model runs on filling abandoned social space, the antifascist response has to include actually filling it back — community infrastructure, youth work, tenant and workplace organizing that doesn't cede rural Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to whoever shows up first with a barbecue and a flag. Counting neo-nazis every June is not a strategy. Out-organizing the vacuum is.
