Activists demonstrated at Merlin Entertainments attractions across the city on Friday and Saturday after the firm said the aquarium’s gentoo penguins would be moved to a large enclosure at the National Sea Life Centre in Birmingham.

Grassroots group Get Free says the move doesn’t go far enough and are demanding Merlin close Sea Life London altogether.

They targeted the London offices of KIRKBI, the investment company of the Lego-owning Kirk Kristiansen family and co-owner of Merlin, and the London Dungeon on Friday.

Get Free spokesperson Sarah Mahood said that a “bigger cage in Birmingham is still a cage, and the sharks, rays and thousands of other animals at Sea Life London aren’t going anywhere.

“Every Merlin attraction will see protests until Sea Life London is closed for good.”
