Fighting in Yemen displaces 16,000 over past week: IOM

The ongoing fighting in Yemen has displaced nearly 16,000 people the past week, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Monday.

The UN agency indicated that 145,308 people (around 24,218 households) were displaced across eight governorates since insecurity escalated on the western coast in June

The total rose by 12 percent, or 15,870 people, between 21 to 28 September. 

"Every week, we count thousands more people who have left everything behind,” said IOM’s chief of mission in Yemen Abdusattor Esoev.

"Behind these figures are parents trying to keep their children safe, older people who cannot travel far, and families who had very little to begin with."

"They need help now, and our response has to move as fast as they are,” he stressed, adding that families are in urgent need of shelter, food and protection.
