This new initiative follows President Donald Trump's National Security Presidential Memo 7, which directed the Justice Department to take action against anyone who espouses "anti-American," "anti-Christian," and "anti-capitalist" views. The new focus on anti-tech extremism adds a previously unmentioned category to the already public classifications, under a presidency that has invested massive political and material capital in AI and data center expansion.
Among the documents in the tranche obtained by WIRED is a report from New York's Office of Intelligence and Counterterrorism that warns of widespread unrest as a result of the introduction of artificial intelligence. Of particular note is a new term for what the office calls an emerging extremist threat.
“The chaotic atmosphere that new AI technologies could create over the next five years could fuel large-scale protests that escalate into civil unrest and violent extremist activity against technology, particularly in large metropolitan areas such as New York City,” the report said. The term “violent anti-tech extremism” does not appear in any publicly available DHS or FBI reports or guidance on domestic extremism and represents a novel lumping of a broad range of ideologies under a single extremist category.
