Humanity Day – Sudan at the center of international solidarity

The Fête de l’Humanité, the annual mass event of the French Communist Party, brings together communist and left-wing parties and progressive forces from different parts of the world. This year, Sudan was represented by its cause and the struggle of its people to end the war and restart the revolutionary process. The participation of our party and the newspaper “Al-Midan” was under the motto: “Let us stand together in solidarity to end the war and resume the path of the Sudanese revolution.”

This participation took place at a historical moment that requires the Sudanese question to be placed at the center of the international solidarity movement. The war is entering its fourth year and has caused enormous destruction, forced millions of people to flee and be displaced, and increased hunger and poverty. At the same time, regional and international interests overlap in Sudan, whose resources and strategic location have become an arena of conflict and competition. At the center of this tragedy is the Sudanese people, who are demanding an end to the war, the restoration of their right to self-determination and the building of a democratic, civil state.

Under these conditions, international solidarity represents part of the political struggle for the future of Sudan. The war is linked to a network of economic, political and military interests that extend beyond the country's borders. Its extension serves forces that benefit from the economy of war and from the continuation of division and destruction. Therefore, exposing these interests, exposing the war networks and strengthening the voice of the Sudanese people in international forums become key tasks.

The expansion of the solidarity movement based on democratic and popular forces opens up opportunities for a political confrontation with the forces that derive their power from the continuation of the war. The December Revolution launched a mass project for freedom, peace and justice. However, the war turned the country away from this path. Resuming the revolutionary process therefore requires restoring the initiative of the people at home, expanding their international support and combining the struggle to end the war with the struggle for fundamental change and the building of a democratic, civil state.

The world's communist, left and progressive forces have a political and internationalist responsibility to support the struggle of the Sudanese people. Sudan is now a theater where warring parties' interests and foreign interventions intersect. At the same time, it is a place of struggle for a people who continue to search for their path to peace, freedom and justice. The broader the solidarity movement becomes, the greater the presence of this issue in the global political consciousness. At the same time, the possibilities for joint efforts to end the war and open a path to change are expanding.

The participation of the party and “Al-Midan” in the Fête de l’Humanité

The participation of our party and the newspaper “Al-Midan” in the Fête de l’Humanité was part of this international work. It served to make the voice of the Sudanese people heard, to expand the circle of solidarity with them and to connect their struggle with the struggles of other peoples.

The meetings built bridges to democratic and progressive forces that can help bring the Sudanese question to the trade unions, social movements, organizations and the public in their respective countries. The party and “Al-Midan” stand brought political and documentary material to the festival. The topics discussed were: the power struggle since 2018, the December Revolution, the war and its consequences, the question of press and political freedoms. Information materials were distributed in French and English. The party participated in political panel discussions in English, which were translated live into French.

The cultural part of the participation was limited to information materials and an event about Jabal al-Barkal as well as some artistic contributions from the party's choir. These activities served to provide information about Sudan and its people without letting the political core of participation take a back seat.

The political significance of international solidarity

The fight to end the war requires a Sudanese mass movement that regains political space from the warring parties, puts its resources and strategic position at the service of the population, and is supported by international solidarity. Such solidarity strengthens their political presence.

The mass front against the war, if it finds support in a broad international solidarity movement, can have greater opportunities to expose the interests behind the war, reject projects to prolong it and exert pressure for the protection of civilians and for opening a path to peace and democracy. Here international solidarity is directly linked to the resumption of the revolutionary process.

Solidarity between peoples goes beyond humanitarian compassion. It is a form of common political struggle based on the unity of interests in the fight against war, authoritarianism and dependency. It includes the exchange of experiences and the development of common forms of action. The workers', democracy and people's movements in various countries have valuable experience in resisting authoritarian rule, in confronting wars and in defending social and political rights. Combining these experiences with the Sudanese struggle expands the scope of action of the popular forces and strengthens their ability to counter the forces that derive their influence from the continuation of the war.

It is from this perspective that our party's meetings with the parties, political forces and organizations that took part in the Fête de l'Humanité took place. The aim was to introduce the Sudanese question as a political and internationalist issue. The nature of the war, the roots of the crisis and the responsibilities of the various actors were explained. At the same time, the party presented its perspective on ending the war and resuming the revolutionary process and called for expanding international solidarity.

The tasks of the solidarity movement

Ending the war is not just a humanitarian task. It is associated with political tasks that require restoring popular initiative, strengthening democratic struggle and creating the conditions for fundamental change.

International solidarity must help support the struggle of the Sudanese people, take their demands to international forums and increase pressure on the forces involved in the continuation of the war or benefiting from it. Connecting the Sudanese struggle with the struggles of other peoples opens up opportunities for joint political and social action. The experiences of trade unions, social movements and democratic forces in different countries can play an important role. Building a broad international solidarity movement is therefore part of the fight to end the war and restore the revolutionary path.

The participation of our party and “Al-Midan” in the Fête de l’Humanité was a contribution to this international work: to make the voice of the Sudanese people heard, to expand solidarity with them and to connect their struggle with the struggles of other peoples.

Let us make people's solidarity a force in the hands of the Sudanese people - to end the war, restart the revolutionary process and build a civil, democratic Sudan where freedom, peace and social justice reign.
