Victim of Chinese arbitrary justice

China's regime can be happy: On Wednesday last week, Joshua Wong pleaded guilty to "conspiring with foreign organizations" in a Hong Kong court. The public prosecutor's office accuses the 29-year-old former leader of student protests in Hong Kong of having led an "international campaign" with other activists against China and its special administrative region of Hong Kong in order to bring about sanctions and other "hostile acts" against them.

Wong is considered one of the leaders of student protests in late 2014 that called for the democratization of Hong Kong and became known as the "Umbrella Revolution" because of their preferred symbol. 

Wong, who wants to avoid a life sentence with his admission of guilt, has been in prison since January 2021 and has been serving a prison sentence of four years and eight months since November 2021 for "subversion" because he held primary elections for his party Demosistō in 2020. The basis of the charges against Wong is Hong Kong's so-called National Security Law, which was passed under great pressure from the Chinese regime in 2020 and which criminalized numerous peaceful political activities as security crimes and enabled a strong wave of repression.

Wong is considered one of the leaders of student protests in late 2014 that called for the democratization of Hong Kong and became known as the "Umbrella Revolution" because of their preferred symbol. They called for a direct election of the head of government of the former British colony, whose official title is Chief Executive of Hong Kong, and who will be elected by a committee made up of representatives from business and professional associations. Its composition and policies now de facto determine China's one-party regime. Instead of meeting demands for democratization, Hong Kong's government intensified repression after mass protests in 2019 against a law on extraditions to the rest of China. Most of Hong Kong's leading opposition figures have now been imprisoned or fled abroad.
