The second victory of an AfD state association classified as right-wing extremist in a state election was to be expected, but the shock is great for many, not just those potentially affected: migrants, women, queer people, those who do political work in NGOs and associations. Everyone who cares about maintaining reasonably democratic conditions and maintaining minimum standards of civilization has reasons to be concerned.

If you read through the AfD's program in Saxony-Anhalt and in the federal government, it becomes quite clear what this party promises - and what it doesn't: No one will be better off, but many will be worse off - and you as Germans can feel superior to those who have been pushed into a weaker position.

It is a promise of revenge, not against those in power, but against phantasmatic enemy images: queer people, Jews, Muslims, women, intellectuals, "left-green scumbags", the unemployed, low earners, "woken", those who are fighting against climate change. And where the AfD opposes real dangers, political Islam for example, it stands out because of its structurally similar thinking. Right-wing extremists and Islamists have a lot in common: the enemy image of the liberal and permissive society, anti-Semitism, a reactionary family and gender image, a deep hatred of cultural modernity and an interest in destruction.
