Several tech workers at Google’s AI unit DeepMind have resigned in protest over the tech giant’s work with the U.S. and Israeli militaries. Last week, DeepMind research engineer Sofia Liguori announced her resignation in a letter to her colleagues titled “Stay Human.” She denounced what she called “Google’s complicity in the Gaza genocide” and the increasing integration of Google’s technology into military and surveillance systems.

“I felt I could not, in good faith, send this message of building AI to benefit humanity while ignoring that our company was complicit in a genocide,” Liguori tells Democracy Now! “The problem is that when the focus is on the model capabilities and on the potential for agents 'going rogue,' we are shifting the attention from a specific human choice … which is this unrestrained, unregulated integration of the systems without red lines.”
