Election campaign in Meck-Pomm: Red finally back in front of brown

‌Reuters/taz | A few days before the state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, according to a survey, the SPD and the AfD are neck and neck. In the “ZDF Political Barometer Extra” published on Thursday, Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig’s SPD got 37 percent and the AfD got 36 percent. ‌The Left would have nine percent, the CDU would have six and the Greens would have five percent. The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) would miss out on entering the state parliament with four percent. This means that the incumbent government made up of the SPD and the Left Party would no longer have a parliamentary majority.

According to the broadcaster, the SPD is benefiting from Schwesig's high reputation in the final stretch of the election campaign. ‌Compared to the previous survey, the Social Democrats gained three percentage points, while the AfD lost one point. The outcome of the election remains uncertain, however, as 21 percent of those surveyed are currently undecided.

In the 2021 state elections, the SPD was clearly the strongest force with 39.6 percent. ‌The AfD came in second with ⁠16.7 percent, followed by the CDU with 13.3 and the Left ‌with 9.9 percent. The Greens were at 6.3 percent.
