Beer and whey from Canada: New US import ban in force

afp | The USA has stopped imports of certain Canadian products until further notice. An import embargo on alcoholic beverages and some dairy products came into force on Tuesday (6 a.m. CEST). Those affected include beer, sparkling wine and whey, but also high-horsepower motorcycles.

Trump defended the controversial measure shortly before it came into force. Canada has treated the United States “very unfairly,” he said during an appearance at the White House on Monday. He announced the import ban at the beginning of September after Canada responded to high US tariffs with counter tariffs.

The trade dispute between the USA and Canada escalated in August after negotiations failed. In mid-September, Trump also threatened the European Union with a trade ban if it offered Canada “associated membership,” as indicated by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

During Trump's second term in office, the actually friendly relations with Canada deteriorated significantly. He caused irritation by saying that he wanted to make the neighboring country the 51st US state. He also signed a decree renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America”.

The border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of New York runs through Lake Ontario. The body of water is one of the five Great Lakes in North America.
