As former Colombian president Gustavo Petro said, “we decide to waste time killing one another” instead of working toward a sustainable future.
From what we hear and see, it is clear that action is needed to stop the dangers threatening all of us as well as the suffering already being endured. World peace is possible and possible soon if enough people work on it.
There is a terrible waste of time, money, and lives : Peace must be obtained soon
Many governments always want more weapons, and seek weapons that are more and more powerful.
NATO allies plan to invest 5% of GDP annually on defence and security by 2035.
The nuclear weapon dropped on Hiroshima had an explosive yield of 15 kilotons of dynamite. Now, nuclear weapons often have an explosive yield of 100 kilotons.
In 2025, the nine nuclear-armed states spent $3768 per second on nuclear weapons.
The price paid by people, more generally the poor and the oppressed is immense. For instance, according to UNHCR, one in every 70 people is now forcibly displaced.
In 2025, 245 000 were killed in “battle-related violence”.
And on top of all this, the climate crisis is getting worse.
If this is not enough to convince us that wars have to be suppressed, we can just notice how the prices are rising in the grocery stores!
UN Secretary-General António Guterres notes that “excessive military spending does not guarantee peace,” but “often undermines it – fueling arms races, deepening mistrust and diverting resources from the very foundations of stability.”
Former five-star general and U.S. president Dwight D. Eisenhower recognized that “every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.”
Peace can be obtained soon
A number of people think world peace can be obtained.
John Horgan finds war the most urgent problem. He also states that it is “more readily solvable” than other afflictions like a hurricane or the Ebola plague. He adds that “war could end tomorrow if a relatively small group of people around the world chose to end it”.
The international Crisis Group notes that “War is not inevitable; it is a man-made disaster.”
In an article from the Bahá’í Faith, one reads that peace can be reached either after “unimaginable horrors” or “by an act of consultative will”. They also state that “world peace is not only possible but inevitable”.
In 2018, Nenad Bach argued that “we have everything we need to achieve world peace in one hour”. His arguments were that Twitter (now X) went around the world in less than one second and that there were about 3 billion smartphones and digital cameras. Among other ideas, he proposed to create a musical album World Peace in One Hour and invited people to sign a petition. He also stated that “Peace is not just profitable but inevitable.”
Awake and organize
In 2023, Europe for Peace declared that “The only chance to avoid the worst lies in the awakening of human beings and the ability of people to organise themselves.”
Michael Sozan reminds us that “peaceful protests by just 3.5% of a nation’s population at a peak moment can make it extremely difficult for the government to ignore people’s demands.”
According to Joseph Duda “when enough people (a critical mass) think and truly consider the plausibility of a concept, it becomes reality.”
It is likely that for world peace, more than 3.5% is necessary. We should aim for over 50%!
Nonviolence remains key to keep people’s approval and participation. It’s likely that joy and fun also play a role and have been found in recent protests.
Protests may be accompanied by strikes and thus become more powerful.
For lasting peace, we need the Golden Rule
It is important to note that, although trying to obtain world peace without delay is important, it is vital to aim for a peace mentality where the Golden Rule is central. That’s where in depth work and a vision of the Universal Human Nation come in.
Conclusion
Wars and especially nuclear weapons threaten all of us. They cost time, money, and lives.
We can reach a peaceful future if enough of us organize and protest in a nonviolent way.
In addition, the Golden Rule must be remembered as quick peace is not sufficient.
