West Ham thrash Wrexham to extend winning run

WEST HAM’S most comprehensive victory of the season so far saw Wrexham trounced in a one-sided game at the London Stadium.

West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen pulled the strings to engineer this, the fourth win, in a row.

Early on, he was put away by a quick throw from Joel Veltman, only to see his shot hit the keeper, then the crossbar and away. 

Konstantinos Mavropanos was then unlucky to see his header from an Arne Engels corner go narrowly wide.

Bowen then turned provider, putting Joel Piroe through but he blazed over from six yards.

The Hammers finally took the lead after Manor Solomon collected a long ball from Divine Mukasa, who fed Morato. His cross was slid home by Bowen.

Wrexham’s best chance came when Mavropanos gave the ball away on the left. The resulting cross saw George Dobson’s shot cleared off the line by the Greek centre-back.

West Ham’s second came when Taty Castellanos laid the ball on for Piroe to finish. A more difficult chance than the one he fluffed earlier.

The second half was two minutes old when a Bowen corner was headed home by Mavropanos.

The lead was extended when Kyle Walker-Peters brought the ball from the back, exchanged passes with Engels, before laying on the chance for Castellanos to stroke home the fourth.

By this time, the game had ceased to be a contest. 

Solomon lifted the ball over a very static Wrexham rearguard for Mohamadou Kante to fire home from the edge of the area.

The rout was completed, when another run from Walker-Peters resulted in his setting up Solomon to finish from the edge of the area.

West Ham head coach Nuno Espirito Santo was unsurprisingly pleased with the result. 

He felt the Mavropanos’s stop on the line was very important at that stage of the game.

The coach was also pleased at how the substitutes kept the momentum going, with Kante scoring and Walker-Peters setting up two.

Wrexham head coach Phil Parkinson was concerned at the lack of resilience shown by his team. 

“Whatever division we have been in we’ve shown the resilience to stay in the game and we didn’t have that,” said Parkinson. “We can do better and will.”

So, a good night’s work for the Irons, as they start to find their footing in the Championship.
