UCU launch fresh wave of strikes at Glasgow Caley

The walkout today will be followed by strikes on September 24 and 29, as well as October 1, 6 and 8 as lecturers battle management plans to axe up to 100 posts.

Bosses have so far refused to rule out compulsory redundancies, prompting not only the latest UCU strike, but a vow from sister union EIS-ULA to escalate its own action.

UCU branch president Karen Lorimer said: “GCU is in a strong financial position with operating surpluses and with cash reserves. There is no financial requirement for management to make these cuts.

“We urge management to reconsider, to engage meaningfully with the unions on campus and rule out compulsory redundancies so this dispute can end.”

A university spokesperson said: “If we are to continue to deliver for our students, we must remain on a sound financial footing, which unfortunately means making difficult decisions now.

“Our door remains open and we are willing to continue discussions with the trade unions.”
