Hampshire Police said it used the Public Order Act to prohibit the wearing of face coverings among the crowd of 350 who gathered from Sunday night into yesterday morning to harass coastguard, lifeboat and border security staff as they brought 149 rescued migrants ashore.
Members of the mob were then seen to set off flares, while others became involved in scuffles with the police leading to the arrests of 11 men aged between 22 and 59, and one 57-year-old woman on suspicion of offences ranging from racially aggravated disorder and assaulting a police officer, to criminal damage and obstruction of a highway to prevent an ambulance attending the area.
The arrests came as French authorities confirmed two men have died attempting to cross the English Channel.
Hampshire’s assistant chief constable Simon Dodds said: “Violence and criminal damage have no part in peaceful protest, our position on this has been clear that we will investigate thoroughly and take robust action against anyone responsible.
“Last night saw a number of incidents that were clearly not peaceful protest, rather violent public disorder, and this will not be tolerated.”
He added: “Our officers did not deserve to be assaulted as they worked incredibly diligently on Sunday to ensure the safety of everyone in the area.
“Neither do they, or anyone from our partner agencies, deserve to be singled out online or subjected to abuse via social media. We will work with our colleagues across policing to address any online threats that are made.
“We will continue to review body-worn video footage and videos posted online to identify any further offences and may make further arrests in due course if required.”
Stand Up to Racism co-convener Sabby Dhalu made clear that it was no protest at all.
“These racially aggravated public order offences and assaults on police officers were carried out by organised fascists, not so-called ‘anti-migrant protesters’,” she said.
“Their increasingly violent and intimidating tactics underline the urgent need to build a strong movement against fascism and racism.
“They are also a response to the success of the movement in challenging fascist mobilisations over the past year, forcing them to adapt their tactics and find new ways to build support and attract recruits.”
