PRESIDENT Donald Trump concluded a turbulent midterm election campaign today after Democrats began to fracture in Michigan, risking their effort to retake the Senate.
Haley Stevens, who lost the Senate primary to Abdul El-Sayed, endorsed Republican Mike Rogers on Sunday after attending a Detroit church service with him, having been uninvited from a joint event with Mr El-Sayed the same day.
“Our Democratic nominee for Senate said I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away,” Ms Stevens said in a video announcing the endorsement, which led her top aide to quit.
“And he’s right. And that’s why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today.”
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer responded: “This is a despicable betrayal from Representative Stevens.”
Mr El-Sayed, who has faced Islamophobic attacks during the campaign, dismissed the endorsement, saying: “At the end of the day, I actually don’t think about Haley Stevens.”
“None of this matters,” he added later, telling reporters a vote for his rival “is going to be a vote for Donald Trump.”
Mr Trump, meanwhile, made his closing pitch at the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool, bringing his slow, expensive and problem-plagued efforts to repair it back into the spotlight on the eve of polling.
Campaigning in Iowa on Sunday, he said he would “love” it if Ms Stevens joined the Republican Party, adding: “Haley said what few people are willing to say. It’s a thing called bravery.”
His administration has made $15 billion (£11.2bn) in promises to agricultural producers in the weeks before the election, intended to offset higher diesel and fertiliser costs which farmers say were driven largely by his tariffs and the Iran war.
A further $13.8bn (£10.3bn) is planned for shortfalls in the 2025 crop year.
All 435 House seats, 35 Senate seats and 36 governorships are being contested.
In Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Democrat Linda Markle, 72, said of the president: “He’s just destroying us. I am so afraid for this country. The division is horrible, absolutely horrible, and I can’t wait to see the back of him.”
In Sioux City, Iowa, cattle rancher Elizabeth Marlett, 61, voted Republican, saying: “Family values are going by the wayside, and they need to be brought back. Our liberties have been stomped all over.”
About 54.5 million people had voted early as of Sunday morning, compared with 46m in 2022, according to the University of Florida.
