PCS Cymru’s Doug Jones emphasised the importance of the social partnership legislation and continuing to ensure that trade unions sit at the decision-making table.

NEU Cymru’s Nicola Fitzgerald made a direct plea for the return of collective bargaining for teachers and support staff, saying the independent pay review body recommendations had been ignored. She asked what the point of it was.

UCU Cymru’s Gareth Lloyd said there were more students than ever before in further education — but not enough staff to teach them.

“Bring everybody in education together, including the trade unions, to work out the solutions,” Mr Lloyd said.

Cabinet Minister for the Constitution Dafydd Trystan Davies said: “Social partnership discussions are taking place and we are committed to that work.”

Mr Davies said that a third of the electorate in Wales voted for the extreme right — and this was partly because people’s everyday issues had been ignored, allowing them to be exploited.
