WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Breanna Stewart top-scored with 19 points as defending champions the USA cruised into the quarter-finals of the World Cup with a thumping 105-64 win over Czechia. 

They will face either Hungary or Japan in the last eight while 2022 runners-up China face a play-off against Puerto Rico to make it through. 

Also into the quarter-finals are second seeds France, Spain and current European champions Belgium. 

SPEEDWAY: Defending champions Ipswich Witches improved their chances of reaching the end of season Premiership play-offs after edging out Sheffield 48-42 on Monday night. 

The scores were level before the Witches won the last two heats with Tobias Musielak top-scoring on 12+2 points. 

Second-placed Leicester maintained their unbeaten home record after leading from the first tape to beat top of the table Belle Vue 49-41.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Last year’s runners-up Palmeiras face Ecuador’s LDU Quito tonight in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals. 

Flamengo, reigning champions of South America’s equivalent to the Champions League, also meet Ecuadorian opposition when they take on Independiente del Valle. 

The other last eight ties see four-time winners Estudiantes up against Corinthians and Argentina’s Platense playing 2023’s champions Fluminense. 

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Wigan captain Liam Farrell will retire at the end of this season. The 36-year-old has played over 400 games for his hometown club, winning six Super League Grand Finals, five Challenge Cups and two World Club Challenge titles since his debut in 2010. 

He was selected in the Super League Dream Team on six occasions, picked up the Harry Sutherland Trophy in 2016 and won 12 international caps for England.
