As a result, the top four seeded teams have reached the semi-finals without playing a game in the tournament. 

Pakistan will take on Bangladesh in Thursday morning’s early game in Nisshin, before world number ones India are up against Sri Lanka. 

MEN’S FOOTBALL: World Cup sensations Cape Verde continued their descent back down to Earth with a 2-1 defeat at home to Rwanda in Tuesday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. They have now lost both of their opening games. 

Other surprise results included 2023’s runners-up Nigeria suffering a 3-0 caning in Guinea-Bissau while four-time champions Ghana, who reached the last 32 at this year’s World Cup, lost 4-2 at home to Gambia.

RUGBY LEAGUE: Wigan’s Brad O’Neill was named as this year’s Super League Man of Steel on Tuesday evening. 

The Leigh-born hooker was part of the Wigan team that won this season’s Challenge Cup and Super League shield before crashing out of the Grand Final play-offs last weekend. 

Wigan’s Jenna Foubister won the Woman of Steel award and Halifax’s Rob Hawkins picked up the Wheels of Steel trophy.

BASEBALL: Chicago White Sox beat Houston Astros 6-4 in the first leg of their best-of-three American League wildcard games as the Major League Baseball end of season play-offs hit the road. 

The winners will face Cleveland Guardians in next week’s Divisional semi-final. 

Ben Rice hit two home runs as New York Yankees crushed Boston Red Sox 9-0 in the other play-off opener with Tampa Bay Rays awaiting the winners.
