MEN’S CYCLING: Brandon McNulty was the shock winner of Sunday’s World Championship road race in Montreal.

The Arizona-born rider finished 13 seconds ahead of Australia’s Michael Matthews with Mathieu van der Poel on the same time in third.

Tom Pidcock was the highest-placed Briton in seventh, with Ireland’s Ben Healy tenth. McNulty is the US’s first road race world champion since Lance Armstrong in 1993.

WOMEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: York Valkyrie withstood sustained second-half pressure to hold on for an 8-6 win over regular season champions Wigan in Sunday’s Grand Final.

Sinead Peach’s try put York in front after just nine minutes before Mia-Jayne Atherton levelled for pre-match favourites Wigan.

A penalty from Ellie Williamson sealed York’s victory and ensured they became the first club to win the Super League title three times.

ICE HOCKEY: Coventry beat Sheffield 4-2 on Sunday evening to add to the sprinkling of surprise Challenge Cup results over the weekend.
