Arsenal and Manchester City, the only other teams to have ever won the trophy, are also missing from the rebranded Players Cup. 

Last year’s runners-up Manchester United start their campaign against Sheffield United at Leigh Sports Village. 

SPEEDWAY: Peter Kildemand top-scored with 11+1 points and Jason Doyle weighed in with 10 from four rides as Belle Vue Aces cruised to a 52-38 win at defending champions Ipswich Witches in the first leg of their Premiership semi-final play-off. 

The second leg takes place in Manchester next Monday. Sheffield host last year’s runners-up Leicester in the first match of their last-four clash tomorrow evening.

WHEELCHAIR RUGBY LEAGUE: Two days after helping Halifax to a second successive domestic treble, Jack Brown, Rob Hawkins and Finlay O’Neill were named in the English World Cup squad to defend their title at this autumn’s tournament in Australia. 

They will be captained by London Roosters’ Lewis King, who picked up the trophy in Manchester four years ago. England meet Wales for their opening game in Wollongong on October 30. 

ICE HOCKEY: Sheffield Steelers look to continue their unbeaten start to the season in this evening’s Elite League fixture at Guildford Flames. 

The Steelers came from 3-0 down to win last week’s Challenge Cup match between the teams 5-4 after a shoot-out. 

Tomorrow’s other Elite League game sees Manchester finally return to their city centre-based Arena when they take on Glasgow, who lost 6-1 at home to Sheffield on Sunday.
